Dana Dolly on a concrete location — quick to deploy, smooth tracking on almost any surface
The Dana Dolly is one of the most practical camera support tools available for location work. Unlike traditional dolly-and-track systems that require a flat-laid track and a significant grip setup to deploy, the Dana Dolly uses two parallel speed rails supported by tripod legs (or C-stands) and a low-profile car that rides on them. The whole system breaks down to fit in a case, deploys in under five minutes, and produces professional tracking shots on surfaces where a traditional dolly is impractical.

How the Dana Dolly Works
Two standard speed rails (48" or 72" depending on your shot length) run parallel, supported by either the included legs or C-stands from the grip package. The dolly car rides on precision-ground rails and accepts a camera head directly. Push the car smoothly by hand for tracking shots; control the speed and distance manually. There's no motor, which keeps it simple, lightweight, and free of interference with audio.
For longer moves, you can link two sets of rails — we carry enough for up to a 12-foot track. Most location tracking shots are 4–8 feet, which the standard configuration handles easily.
Surfaces That Work (and Don't)
The Dana Dolly's superpower is its flexibility with surfaces:
- Concrete / pavement — ideal. Level the rails with leg adjustments.
- Hardwood interior floors — ideal. Fast setup, great results.
- Packed sand — works with careful leveling; beach shoots are common with this rig
- Grass — works on flat ground; uneven terrain requires shims under the leg feet
- Soft sand / deep grass — difficult. Rails need solid footing; carry sandbags under the legs
- Tile / polished stone — excellent, very smooth
- Carpet — works, but the leg feet may indent; check with location manager
Speed and Shot Design
The Dana Dolly is a manual system — push speed is operator-dependent. For clean results, designate one grip to push the car and run the move several times at consistent speed before rolling. Mark start and end positions on the rails. For very slow, controlled moves (product reveals, beauty shots), have the operator practice the move 6–8 times before the take.

Pair it with a fluid head: The Dana Dolly car accepts a ball head or flat base. For tracking shots, a fluid head (pan/tilt) on the car lets you adjust framing during the move. If you're renting a camera package locally, confirm the head compatibility before shoot day.
