Honda EU7000is staged at a location shoot — Indian River County, FL
Every conversation about location lighting eventually comes down to power. And if you're shooting in Florida away from building circuits — on the beach, in a park, in a field, at a private estate without a 200A panel — the generator is your power plant. Pick the wrong one and you're fighting noise in every audio take. Pick the right one and it disappears into the background.
We rent the Honda EU7000is as part of our electric package. Here's why it's the right call for most Treasure Coast productions and what you need to know to run it safely on your shoot.
Why the EU7000is Specifically?
There are cheaper generators. There are more powerful generators. The EU7000is is the one that makes sense for a working film set because it solves the two problems that matter: noise and clean power.
Noise Floor
At quarter load — which is roughly where our full LED package runs — the EU7000is operates at 49–52dB. That's about the level of a quiet conversation. You can run dialogue scenes within 30–40 feet of this generator without it appearing on a boom mic. Try that with a conventional open-frame generator and you're picking it up at 200 feet.
Inverter Technology = Clean Power
Inverter generators produce a "true sine wave" — power that behaves like wall current, with stable voltage and frequency. This matters for your LED drivers and camera batteries. Conventional generators produce a "modified sine wave" that can damage sensitive electronics over time and sometimes causes LED drivers to flicker or behave erratically. Every Aputure unit in our inventory is rated for inverter generator power. None of them are rated for conventional generator power — and that's not us being precious, it's Aputure's own spec sheet.
Generator placement tip: In Florida, heat is a factor. Run the EU7000is in the shade when possible and give it 18 inches of clearance on all sides. It will run cooler and quieter, and you'll burn through fuel more slowly.
Power Capacity — What Can You Run?
The EU7000is peaks at 7,000W and runs continuously at 5,500W. Our full LED lighting inventory — 600d Pro, 300d II, 120d, 120t, and two Amaran 100d units — draws approximately 1,800W at full output. You have over 3,500W of continuous headroom after that for camera batteries, monitors, a laptop, hair/makeup tools, and craft services.
What you cannot run simultaneously on the EU7000is: 4+ tungsten fresnel units, large HMI packages, or high-draw practical effects. If your lighting package trends heavy on traditional fixtures, talk to us before your shoot day.
Runtime and Fuel
At quarter load, the EU7000is runs approximately 18 hours on a full tank (5.1 gallons). At half load, about 8 hours. Most shoot days, you're looking at 10–12 hours of operation with one fill-up. We deliver the generator with a full tank; fuel for the day is your responsibility. Regular 87-octane works fine — Honda recommends against ethanol blends above 10%.
Running It Safely on Your Location
- Never run a generator indoors or in an enclosed space — carbon monoxide
- Keep it at least 20 feet from any door, window, or HVAC intake
- Use a 12-gauge or heavier extension cord for long runs; never daisy-chain lightweight household cords
- Ground it if your distro requires it (our C7 distro includes a grounding spike)
- Have a dry-chemical fire extinguisher within reach per industry standard
Pairing With Our Distro and Stingers
We include 100ft stingers and a C7 distribution box with every electric rental. The C7 distro gives you 6 outlets on a single 60A feed — enough to run our full LED package from one connection to the generator. For longer cable runs (outdoor locations where the generator needs to be farther away), we can discuss additional stinger runs when you book.
