In Florida, you have free light everywhere — the problem is controlling it. Shiny boards let you redirect that free sunlight exactly where you need it: filling shadows under talent's eyes, adding a kick on a subject's hair, or bouncing a soft fill into a dark interior through a window. The specular silver side is a hard, directional source — precise and bright. The matte white side is a soft, broad fill. Learn to read how the board moves relative to the sun to dial in the quality and intensity of your bounce.
Gaffer
Shiny boards are zero power budget, zero setup time, and free light — the most cost-effective tool in an outdoor kit. Experienced gaffers often spend 10 minutes repositioning boards before plugging in a single fixture, because correct board placement can eliminate the need for an additional light entirely. The trade-off is cloud dependency — a passing cloud kills your bounce source instantly, which is why boards work best on clear days or as supplements to your main lighting package, not as primary sources on overcast days.
Key Grip / Beginner
Mount the shiny board to a C-stand arm via the stand mount bracket on its back frame. Point the stand's load-side leg toward the board (toward the sun). Always use at least 2 sandbags — the board is large and acts like a sail in Florida's coastal breeze. The key technique is having someone hold the board and slowly pivot it while watching the talent's face — you'll see the bounce kick in cleanly when the angle is right. Never leave a mounted shiny board unattended in windy conditions.

Shiny boards and bounce panels are designed for outdoor production. The frames and mylar/foil surfaces handle sun and weather well. Extended UV exposure over years can cause foil degradation, but for rental production use they're fully outdoor-safe. Sandbag heavily in any coastal wind conditions.
