20×20 Overhead Frame

The single most important piece of grip for any exterior Florida shoot. Drops ambient contrast 1.5–2 stops and turns harsh midday sun into a giant wraparound soft source. Non-negotiable on outdoor commercial work.

From the DP's Perspective

Director of Photography

If you're shooting an exterior in Florida between 9am and 4pm without a 20×20, you're fighting the sun instead of using it. Florida's midday light is not just bright — it's overhead, contrasty, and creates deep eye socket shadows on talent that no amount of fill can fix without looking obviously lit. The 20×20 overhead drops into that harsh ambient and converts it: put the diffusion up, and what was a hard overhead source becomes a giant soft box that wraps talent from above and softens shadows dramatically. Combined with a 600d Pro punched through the grid from above, you're creating a controlled large soft source that reads as natural sunlight — but without the harshness.

Gaffer

The 20×20 is the foundation of an exterior daylight setup on the Treasure Coast. I always rig it first — once it's up and the ambient is controlled, everything else falls into place. Assembly takes two grips about 20 minutes. The frame sections connect without tools, then the fabric clips or ties to the frame. Position the overhead so the shadow falls entirely on your talent and any key background elements. For beach and waterfront shoots, every corner of the base needs to be staked or heavily sandbag-weighted — coastal wind can load a 20×20 like a sail. I never leave a rigged overhead unattended on a windy day.

Key Grip / Beginner

Rigging the 20×20 is the most physically demanding setup task of the day. You need at least two people on the frame assembly and ideally three when hoisting the completed frame to height. Work systematically: lay out all the frame sections flat before connecting anything, assemble from the center outward, then hoist from the outside in. Never stand under a frame that hasn't been secured at all four corners. In any wind, position yourself and your team on the upwind side when rigging — don't let the frame catch wind while you're still under it. Sandbag every base leg after the frame is up and secured.

Best For

Exterior Florida shoots in direct sunlight (mandatory for quality) · Beach, waterfront, and open-field locations · Outdoor commercial and branded content where skin tones matter · Any talent-facing exterior setup between 9am and 4pm · Outdoor portrait and editorial work · Nature, lifestyle, and tourism content requiring controlled daylight

Outdoor & Weather Use

⚠️

Wind-sensitive — stake and sandbag all corners. The 20×20 is designed for outdoor use but can become dangerous in strong wind. Florida coastal locations and open fields can have unpredictable gusts. Always stake (grass/sand) or heavily sandbag (hard surface) all four base corners. If wind exceeds 15mph sustained, seriously consider taking the overhead down — a loaded 400 sq ft frame in a gust is a safety incident. We include extra rigging hardware for stake anchoring.
